........and in the Lower Minnesota River Watershed District?

If you are interested in:

  • water resources
  • preserving the environment
  • protecting the Minnesota River and its unique natural resources

Then you should consider becoming a District Manager!

The Lower Minnesota River Watershed District is looking for an individual from Carver County interested in filling a vacant position on its Board of Managers.

Watershed district managers preside over the business of the watershed district, to conserve and ensure the wise use of natural resources of the state through regulation, based upon sound scientific principles and to protect the public health, safety and welfare as outlined in Minnesota Statutes 103B, 103D and 103E.

Working as part of the board, managers help to set policy, guide staff, and make key decisions on District priorities.  In addition, the Lower Minnesota River Watershed District business includes managing material dredged from the Minnesota River to improve recreational and commercial navigation.

Managers attend regularly scheduled meetings of the district board and other meetings related to the business of the district. Managers are responsible for promoting district activities and maintaining cooperative working relationships with local, state and federal agencies and organizations. Board member's are expected to be able to spend approximately 10 or more hours each month on Watershed District work.

No special skills or expertise are required, however board members must have a desire to serve.  Because of the nature of the work of the Board it may be helpful, but is not necessary, to have a background in water conservation, farming, development, law, engineering, environment or policy making.  Individuals are being sought that have an interest in the preservation of water resources, with particular emphasis on maintaining water quality standards and in managing water from both a social and a government standpoint.

Regular meetings are held monthly on the third Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the County Board room of the Carver County Government Center, 602 East 4th Street, Chaska.  Special meetings may be held occasionally, as well as field trips to view project sites.

Individuals wish to be considered must reside in Carver County and the Watershed DIstrict.  Persons interested in being appointed to serve on the Watershed Board should email at dwabbe@co.carver.mn.us or call 952-361-1503.

The Board is comprised of five members who must reside in the District and the County they represent.  Managers are appointed to staggered  three-year terms.

Portions of the cities of Carver, Chanhassen and Chaska fall within the Lower Minnesota River Watershed District.  An interactive map of the District can be found here.
